Every day we are asked the same question – “how
exactly are these old mobiles recycled?”
The answer is that it is quite a long process and involves many people giving up both their time and energy to help us with our work.
| Step-by-Step |
We carry out monthly collections from the participating mobile phone stores across the south of England After collection we devote a day to sorting out the many mobile phones that have been devoted. From the Recycling 4 Africa headquarters in Brighton we sort them into size and type of accessory. We then package them up with all the paperwork and ship them over to the Recycling 4 Africa office over in Nigeria Once they arrive, the R4A team sort out the consignment into those that are in full working order and those that need repairing. Any that need repairing are then put through another sorting process to determine what needs to be done to them. For example, many of the phones that we receive have faulty screens, many are locked so they cannot be used, and of course there are those that have network problems, those that won’t charge and so on. Once sorted, the phones are assigned to the designated engineers, who go on to repair them |
Unfortunately there are phones in each consignment that we simply cannot repair. However, these do not go to waste because our clever engineers take them apart and use the parts that are in working order to mend other phones.
